Kranj Foto Fest, an international festival of contemporary photography based in Slovenia, announces its Open Call for projects to be exhibited during the 5th edition of the festival in August 2025. The jury will select one winner, who will receive a solo exhibition at Kranj Foto Fest 2025, a €1,000 cash prize, travel expenses to Kranj (up to €400), and accommodation for three nights during the festival's opening week.

General

  1. Kranj Foto Fest is an annual festival of contemporary photography that was established in 2021 in the city of Kranj, Slovenia, with the aim of exhibiting, supporting, and developing the works of Slovenian and international photographers. 

  2. The non-profit organization Zavod Photo Dialogue, registered in the city of Kranj, Slovenia, VAT number SI 84663260, is the organiser of the Kranj Foto Fest Open Call for Exhibitions 2025.

  3. The selection of projects to be exhibited at the festival is primarily conducted through an Open Call for Exhibitions. The aim of the Kranj Foto Fest Open Call for Exhibitions 2025 is to select works for inclusion in the festival's 2025 exhibition program, to take place in August and September 2025 in Slovenia.

Terms of participation in the Open Call

  1. Photographers, visual artists, and visual storytellers older than 18 years old (individuals, duets or collectives) from all over the world, can apply to this open call.

  2. There is no theme or technique limitation, but the photos should be part of a story, series or project. 

  3. Each participant may submit a maximum of two projects. The application fee is €12 for one project. If submitting two projects, the total fee is €16, with an additional €4 for the second project.

  4. By applying to this Open Call, submitters (individuals, duets, or collectives) guarantee that they are the original authors of their projects and that the works do not infringe upon any third-party rights.

  5. Photographers should guarantee that they have the same submitted photos in high resolution which is ideal for exhibition printing. These hi-res files will be required if your work is selected.

  6. By being selected in the Kranj Foto Fest Open Call for Exhibitions 2025, the photographers understand and agree that their images can be used to promote the festival in digital and printed materials, press and on social media.

  7. The winner agrees that, at the conclusion of the festival 2025, one of their printed photograph exhibited at the festival 2025 will be donated to the festival's main sponsor.

  8. Submissions are made through the Picter Contest website. The deadline for creating an account on the Picter Contest platform, completing registration, and submitting entries for the Kranj Foto Fest Open Call for Exhibitions 2025 is midnight Central European Time on 23 February 2025.

  9. An application is considered complete when it includes the images, the project description, and the submitter's biography. The texts may be submitted in either Slovene or English.

  10. Submissions can be edited on www.picter.com after the registration has ended, but no later than by 23.02.2025.

  11. By participating in this Open Call, the participant agrees to allow the organiser to use their email address for informational purposes, including newsletters.

  12. Individuals who do not meet the requirements outlined in these terms or provide false information will be disqualified from this Open Call.

  13. By entering this Open Call, the participant acknowledges and agrees to the terms and conditions outlined in these rules.

Awards

  1. The jury will select one winner to receive a solo exhibition at Kranj Foto Fest 2025, with all production costs covered by the festival. The winner will also be awarded a €1,000 cash prize, travel expenses to Kranj (up to €400), and accommodation for three nights during the festival's opening week in August 2025. In addition to the winner, the festival will select up to 12 other projects to participate in group exhibitions at Kranj Foto Fest 2025, with all production costs covered by the festival and accommodation provided for three nights during the festival's opening week in August 2025.

  2. The budget allocated for exhibition production will be determined by the organiser, ensuring the best possible support for all selected projects.

Organiser's commitments 

  1. Your application will be handled and judged by a team of experts in photography.

  2. Kranj Foto Fest undertakes the responsibility of curating, printing the photos, and producing the exhibitions for the locations chosen by the organiser in the city of Kranj, Slovenia.

  3. The venue for your exhibition will be determined based on the nature of your project and the curatorial guidelines, whether in an indoor or outdoor space. This will be discussed with the selected artists.

  4. The festival will carry out PR and marketing activities to promote your project as part of this Open Call and your exhibition. Your work may be featured in the festival's printed and digital publications, with proper credit given to the authors.

  5. The festival offers opportunities for your work to gain continued exposure after the conclusion of Kranj Foto Fest 2025, through circulation to other venues in Slovenia and abroad. This will always be done with prior consultation and approval from the artists.

  6. The organiser reserves the right to cancel the festival or this Open Call in the event of circumstances beyond their control.

  • Announcement of the Open Call: 20 December 2024

  • Project Submission Deadline: 23 February 2025

  • Judging Process: 24 February to 14 March 2025

  • Results Announcement: by 20 March 2025

  1. The evaluation of projects will be conducted by a jury appointed by the organiser, which will be announced on www.picter.com.

  2. The jury's decisions are final and non-appealable.

  3. The jury is not obliged to justify their decisions or provide information on the deliberations.

  4. The results will be published on the festival's website and social media channels and selected photographers will be contacted by email.
