Calling all professional, amateur and female photographers! Women Sport Australia (WSA) the national advocacy body for women and girls in sport, are delighted to launch the 2025 Women in Sport Photo Action Awards (WISPAA). Entering its 7th year, WISPAA aims to generate greater recognition, appreciation and respect for the power, strength and athleticism of Australian female athletes participating in sport. Finalists will be exhibited at the in person awards evening in Sydney in July 2025, featured as part of the People’s Choice Award selection and the winning photographers will receive a cash prize of $850 per category.
Professional
A “professional photographer” is a photographer who is employed or contracted to take photos or who otherwise sells photos for commercial gain, including via online channels.
Amateur
An “amateur photographer” is a photographer who is not employed or contracted to take photos or has sold them for commercial gain including via online channels.
Female Photographers
For the purposes of this award category and definition of female in the “Female Photographer” category, WSA follows the Australian Government Guidelines on the Recognition of Sex and Gender (published by the Attorney-General’s Department in July 2013 and updated November 2015). The female photographer may be professional or amateur, as defined in the applicable categories.
The Australia Government guidelines indicate "the Australian Government recognises that individuals may identify and be recognised within the community as a gender other than the sex they were assigned at birth or during infancy, or as a gender which is not exclusively male or female. This should be recognised and reflected in their personal records held by Australian Government departments and agencies."
