Loose Joints Publishing and the Mahler & LeWitt Studios are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for artists engaged with environmental issues through photography, in partnership with Atmos and with support from Picter.

  • By agreeing to Loose Joints and Mahler & Lewitt Studios's Terms and Conditions for the Publishing Performance award, the agreement is between yourself (the "Applicant") and Loose Joints, whose registered address is 7 rue du Chevalier Roze, Marseille 13002, France. The Publishing Performance Terms and Conditions are additional to the Terms and Conditions of the software provider Picter, which can be viewed here: https://www.picter.com/legal/terms/

  • By submitting proposals to Publishing Performance, the Applicant hereby agrees that:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age and not in higher education.

  • You must be able to travel to Italy for the residency period of 11 September -- 08 October 2023 and meet any travel entry requirements imposed due to COVID-19.

  • Your proposal must engage with themes of the anthropocene, climate change and the environment as part of its outcome.

  • Images must be at least 1500px on the long side (JPG files are preferred).

  • Submissions are allowed in projects consisting of 1 to 10 images per project and/or a short video (5 mins max)

  • We expect the applicant to commit to a period of research and development at the Mahler & LeWitt Studios, including participation in an informal Open Studios event at the close of the residency, where work-in-progress may be shared with our audiences.

  • The applicant will be expected to develop a contribution to an end-of-year Mahler & LeWitt Studios publication, made available online and in print. Previous contributions have included interviews with the curator, texts, original artworks or a combination of all three.

  • The applicant will be expected to work collaboratively after the residency and enter into a publishing agreement with Loose Joints. A draft of this agreement will be shared with you if you are successful.

  • The applicant will be expected to work continuously on the development of this book alongside Loose Joints in the time leading up to the publication release in Summer 2024.

  • The book will be launched with events in London and Marseille in Summer 2024, dates and locations to be confirmed nearer the time.

  • Applicants acknowledge that Loose Joints and Mahler & Lewitt Studios rely fully upon the warranties and license given by Entrants when submitting their entries for consideration in Publishing Performance. Entrants indemnify and hold Loose Joints and Mahler & Lewitt Studios harmless from any claims, actions, proceedings, costs and expenses arising as a result of any allegation that the relevant Applicant did not own or is not wholly entitled and authorized to allow publication and reproduction of the work by Loose Joints and Mahler & Lewitt Studios.

  • Deadline for entries is 30 April 2023, 11:59 p.m CET.  

  • The awardee will be notified on or about 26 May 2023. The awardee will be publicly announced on 19 June 2023.

  • Loose Joints, Mahler & Lewitt Studios and Picter will not publish, share or redistribute any of the work to any individuals or organisations external to us for the duration of the submission process or post-submission process.

  • Submissions before or after the submission period will not be taken into consideration.

  • Unfortunately it is not possible to give individual feedback to applicants who are not selected for the award due to the volume of applications.
