1. General Information

Photo Elysée, Cantonal Museum for Photography, is a Museum of the Canton of Vaud managed by the Plateforme 10 Foundation.

Internationally recognized, Photo Elysée is one of the world's leading museums entirely dedicated to photography. Since its establishment in 1985, the museum has worked to improve public understanding of the photographic medium through innovative exhibitions, key publications and engaging events. In a shared commitment to foster creativity and support the production of new work, Photo Elysée and Parmigiani Fleurier have been founding partners of the Prix Elysée since 2014. The prize runs every two years. The sixth edition will take place 2024-2026.

The Prix Elysée is a two-phase prize to support creative work, in which the work-in-progress of 8 nominees and the winner's finalized project are all promoted (publication and/or exhibition and/or installation, etc.).

The prize is open to photographers and artists who use photography in their practice, regardless of age or nationality, whose work has been the subject of first exhibitions and publications that have brought them national recognition, or even international visibility. However, they have not yet benefited from a mid-career retrospective. They are recommended by a reputed professional in the field of photography or art (museum, gallery, publishing house, journalism, etc.). All photographic genres and techniques are welcome. The prize has no theme. Proposed projects must be new and unrealized, i.e. never exhibited or published before, and must not have been submitted to any other prize.

During the first year, 8 nominees are selected upon their entry portfolios. Each will receive a contribution of CHF 5,000 for a first valorisation of their project.

The following year, an international jury examines the complete file of each nominee ad chooses the winner. She or he receives CHF 80'000. This sum is allocated partly to the production of the project and partly to the presentation of the project (book or exhibition), both of which must be completed on time and within budget. The curator will continue to accompany the winner in this process. The finalized project is presented at a major Photo Elysée event.

2. Grants

The following grants will be awarded as part of the Prix Elysée:

• A contribution of CHF 5,000 to each of the 8 nominated artists

• A prize worth CHF 80,000 to the winner

The photographers may only use these sums to carry out the work required as part of the Prix Elysée.

3. Timetable for the Prix Elysée 2025

• Applications open on November 10, 2023 and close on January 28, 2024

• The jury will select 8 nominees, who will be announced in June 2024

• A presentation of the work in progress of the 8 nominees will take place in January 2025

• The nominees must provide Photo Elysée a complete dossier (A4 prints and a precise description of the project to be carried out) for the international jury by February 2025

• The international jury will meet in spring 2025 to select the winner, who will be announced in June 2025

• The winner's finalized project will be presented in June 2026

4. Candidates

The Prix Elysée is aimed at photographers or artists who make use of photography. Artists should have experienced exhibiting in group and/or solo shows -- in galleries, museums, or other cultural institutions -- and publications that have brought them national recognition, or even international visibility. Nevertheless, they have not yet enjoyed a mid-career retrospective.

Applications are welcome from artists of any age or nationality. They may submit work as individuals or a collective. In the case of a collective application, the group of artists must nominate a representative to act as the museum's contact. Individual and collective applications will be assessed in exactly the same way.

5. Submission Material

All photographic work will be taken into consideration. No preference will be given to particular genres or techniques.

No work containing any reference, whether direct or indirect, to any brand of watch or any product from the watchmaking industry will be considered.

6. Application Procedure

Artists apply for the Prix Elysée in their own name, and submit their application directly via the Picter platform.

Candidates for the Prix Elysée must be recommended by a reputed professional in the fields of photography or art (museum, gallery, publishing, journalism, etc.).

Candidates' portfolios must include the following:

• A representative portfolio of the candidate's work consisting of 10 (maximum) high-definition digital files (.jpg files, max 3000px). Photographers may present a selection of individual works, works from a series or a series as a whole, or even preparatory work for the proposed Prix Elysée project, should it be available. The name of each digital file must be "artist name_number"

(i.e.: Smith_01.jpg, Smith_02.jpg, etc.)

• A short description of the proposed prize project (maximum 500 words)

• A short biography (maximum 30 words)

• A CV including the following: complete contact details, education, selected exhibitions and publications

• The Prix Elysée application form, completed and signed

• A letter of recommendation, addressed to Photo Elysée, from the candidate's reference, who must also complete and sign the relevant form

The official languages of the Prix Elysée are French and English. Photo Elysée reserves the right to edit texts, in consultation with the photographers, and will take responsibility for translations between the two languages.

Incomplete submissions and portfolios that do not comply with the standards and formats laid out in these rules will be rejected automatically, without further justification.

Photo Elysée reserves the right to archive any file shared on the Picter platform.

Each candidate undertakes to grant the Prix Elysée exclusive rights to her or his project until the nominees are announced in June 2024.

7. Nomination

The 8 nominees will be selected by a jury. The decision of the jury is final.

The nominees will be contacted individually by Photo Elysée in spring 2024. They will then have five days to confirm that they will participate in the Prix Elysée and be available to attend the nominees announcement event in late June 2024 (the exact date will be communicated later). The identities of the nominees will be revealed publicly on this occasion and broadcast the following day on the Prix Elysée website as well as on social networks and in the press. A selection of images will be distributed to the press and used by Photo Elysée and Parmigiani Fleurier to promote the Prix Elysée.

Should any candidate decline the nomination, be unable to honour the commitments involved or fail to confirm her or his participation (or do so too late), the jury will select another photographer.

After being informed by Photo Elysée that they have been selected in spring 2024, the nominees will be invited to sign a contract granting the museum free and exclusive rights to use a selection of their work for the sole purpose of promoting the Prix Elysée and for the aforementioned valorisation of their work in progress. Photo Elysée will have the power to grant the same rights to Parmigiani Fleurier.

After signing the contract, the nominees will receive their individual contributions and will be able to start work on their projects. They agree not to disclose that they have been nominated or to make their projects public until after the official announcement in late June 2024.

The nominees also agree to grant their projects exclusively to Photo Elysée and Parmigiani Fleurier until the winner in announced in 2025. With the exception of the winner, they will then be free to carry out their projects, and to publicise and exhibit them, should they so wish. In this case, they will have the opportunity, but not the obligation, to describe themselves as "Nominated for the Prix Elysée 2025, supported by Parmigiani Fleurier".

8. Presentation of the nominated projects

In return for the individual contribution of CHF 5,000 that they will receive, the nominees undertake to provide the elements required by Photo Elysée according to the type of valuation envisaged. These elements must not refer, directly or indirectly, to any brand of watch or any product from the watchmaking industry.

In addition, the nominees undertake to send Photo Elysée in February 2025 (the exact date will be communicated at a later stage):

• A complete, physical, project portfolio for the attention of the international jury which must include the following:

  • A detailed description of the project

  • A timetable for producing the project

  • Between 5 and 20 visuals (printed version in A4 format and corresponding high-definition files, according to the standards specified in point 6), whether they are images already shown in the framework of the Prix Elysée or new photographs taken in the meantime as part of the project

The rules on language, editing and translation for the application process (see point 6) apply equally to the entire project portfolio.

Any nominee who fails to submit the necessary material by the aforementioned dates or to comply with the required standards and formats will be automatically eliminated from the Prix Elysée.

Images provided in the final project portfolios may be used by Photo Elysée and Parmigiani Fleurier to promote the Prix Elysée.

9. Jury

The international jury's decisions are final. It has the sole authority to select the winner on the basis of the applications, completed project portfolios and the valorisation made of it within the framework of the Prix Elysée.

The jury will consist of 7 members. Individuals change for each edition of the Prix Elysée but it always includes:

• 1 representative appointed by Photo Elysée

• 1 representative appointed by Parmigiani Fleurier

• 5 leading and internationally acclaimed professionals in the world of photography, selected by Photo Elysée

The international jury will convene in spring 2025 and will judge the nominees on the quality of their photographic work, the relevance of their projects and their ability to carry them out. Once the jury has selected a winner for the Prix Elysée, its decision cannot be changed.

The winner will be contacted in person by Photo Elysée. She or he agrees to be available in June 2025 for the corresponding announcement event, the date and location of which will be communicated at that time, and not to reveal her or his victory before that date. The identity of the winner will be revealed on that occasion, and then published the following day on the Prix Elysée website.

10. Production of the Winning Project 

Once the winner has been nominated, the curator will accompany her or him in the production of the project. The curator will provide her or his expertise, in terms of both form and content, so that the winning project can be carried out within the deadline (June 2026) and available budget.

The winner agrees to respect the technical specifications laid down by Photo Elysée and to grant exclusive rights to the project to the museum from June 2025 to June 2026.

The winner's project will be presented publicly in June 2026.

11. Rights and Responsabilities

• All texts and images submitted as part of the Prix Elysée must be free of third party rights following the submission of applications

• Photo Elysée and Parmigiani Fleurier will have the necessary rights for publicity and promoting the Prix Elysée by the museum and Parmigiani Fleurier, for publication in the press and projection in the course of all aforementioned events

• These obligations remain in force for the nominees until the winner is announced. The winner's image rights will be detailed in a separate contract with the museum

• By entering the competition, photographers accept all aforementioned terms and conditions

12. Miscellaneous

Photo Elysée reserves the right to alter the rules set out here at any time, after having duly informed any candidates who have submitted an application that complies with the criteria laid out before any such modification.

These rules are governed by Swiss Law and the competent courts in Lausanne, Switzerland, have exclusive jurisdiction.

13. Timetable

• November 10, 2023 to January 28, 2024: applications open

• June 2024: presentation of the nominees

• August 2024: the first images of the project are ready to be shown

• January 2025: promotion of the work in progress of the 8 nominees

• February 2025: deadline for the nominees to submit final portfolios for consideration of the international jury

• June 2025: Prix Elysée award ceremony

• June 2026: deadline for the winner to complete her or his work and presentation during a dedicated event

French Terms and Conditions

1. Généralités

Photo Elysée, musée cantonal pour la photographie, est un musée de l'Etat de Vaud géré par la Fondation Plateforme 10.

Reconnu à l'échelle internationale, Photo Elysée est l'un des plus importants musées entièrement consacrés à la photographie. Depuis sa création en 1985, il s'interroge sur la photographie et la fait connaître grâce à des expositions innovantes, des publications de référence et des événements ouverts à un large public. Dans un engagement commun pour encourager la créativité et la réalisation de nouvelles œuvres, Photo Elysée et Parmigiani Fleurier sont associés depuis 2014 autour du Prix Elysée. Le prix est organisé tous les deux ans. La sixième édition a lieu de 2024 à 2026.

Le Prix Eylsée est un prix de soutien à la création en deux phases, dans le cadre duquel est valorisé à la fois le travail en cours de 8 nominé-e-s, et le résultat obtenu par la ou le lauréat-e (publication et/ou exposition et/ou installation, etc.).

Le prix est ouvert à des photographes ou des artistes utilisant la photographie, quel que soit leur âge ou leur nationalité, dont le travail a fait l'objet de premières expositions et publications qui leur ont apporté une reconnaissance nationale, voire une visibilité internationale. Pour autant, elles et ils n'ont pas encore bénéficié d'une rétrospective à mi-carrière. Elles et Ils sont recommandé-e-s par un-e professionnel-le reconnu-e dans le domaine de la photographie ou de l'art (musée, galerie, édition, journalisme, etc.). Tous les genres et techniques photographiques sont bienvenus. Le prix n'a pas de thème. Les projets proposés doivent être inédits et pas encore réalisés, c'est-à-dire jamais exposés ou publiés auparavant, et ne doivent pas avoir participé à d'autres prix.

Au cours de la première année, 8 nominé-e-s sont désigné-e-s sur la base de leur dossier de candidature. Elles et Ils reçoivent une contribution de 5'000 CHF en vue d'une première valorisation de leur projet.

L'année suivante, un jury international réuni par Photo Elysée examine le dossier complet de chaque nominé-e, et désigne la ou le lauréat-e. Elle ou Il reçoit 80'000 CHF. Cette somme est attribuée pour partie à la production du projet et pour partie à la présentation du projet (livre ou exposition), qui doivent tous deux être achevés dans les temps et selon le budget impartis. La ou le commissaire de Photo Elysée poursuit l'accompagnement de la ou du lauréat-e dans ce processus. Le projet finalisé est présenté à l'occasion d'un événement majeur de Photo Elysée.

2. Dotations

Le Prix Elysée octroie les dotations suivantes :

• Une contribution individuelle de 5'000 CHF pour les 8 artistes nominé-e-s

• Un prix d'une valeur de 80'000 CHF pour la ou le lauréat-e

Ces montants doivent être utilisés par les artistes uniquement pour accomplir le travail qui leur est demandé dans le cadre du Prix Elysée.

3. Calendrier du Prix Elysée 2025

• Le dépôt des candidatures est ouvert du 10 novembre 2023 au 28 janvier 2024

• Le jury sélectionne 8 nominé-e-s, qui seront révélé-e-s en juin 2024

• Une présentation du travail en cours des 8 nominé-e-s a lieu en janvier 2025

• Les nominé-e-s doivent remettre à Photo Elysée un dossier complet (tirages A4 et description précise du projet à réaliser) à destination du jury international en février 2025

• Le jury international se réunit au printemps 2025 pour sélectionner la ou le lauréat-e, dont le nom sera annoncé en juin 2025

• Le projet finalisé de la ou du lauréat-e est présenté en juin 2026

4. Candidat·e·s

Le Prix Elysée s'adresse à des photographes ou des artistes utilisant la photographie. Leur travail doit avoir fait l'objet de premières expositions collectives ou individuelles -- dans des galeries, musées ou autres institutions culturelles -- et de publications qui leur ont apporté une reconnaissance nationale, voire une visibilité internationale. Pour autant, elles et ils n'ont pas bénéficié d'une rétrospective à mi-carrière.

Les artistes, quel que soit leur âge ou leur nationalité, sont invité-e-s à déposer leur candidature. Elle peut être individuelle ou collective. En cas de candidature collective, le groupe désigne un-e représentant-e en tant qu'interlocuteur-trice de Photo Elysée. Une candidature collective a les mêmes prérogatives qu'une candidature individuelle.

5. Indications sur le contenu

Tout travail photographique est pris en considération, quel que soit le genre ou la technique choisi par les artistes.

Toutefois, tout travail comportant une référence, directe ou indirecte, à une marque ou un produit horloger ne sera pas pris en considération.

6. Modalités de candidature

Les artistes posent leur candidature au Prix Elysée en leur nom et transmettent leur dossier directement via la plateforme Picter.

Les candidat-e-s au Prix Elysée doivent être obligatoirement recommandé-e-s par un-e professionnel-le reconnu-e dans le domaine de la photographie ou de l'art (musée, galerie, édition, journalisme, etc.).

Les dossiers de candidatures doivent impérativement contenir :

• Un portfolio représentatif du travail de la ou du candidat-e composé de 10 (maximum) fichiers numériques en haute définition (fichiers jpg, max 3000px). Les photographes peuvent présenter une sélection d'œuvres individuelles, d'œuvres tirées d'une série ou l'ensemble de cette série, voire, le cas échéant, des travaux préparatoires du projet proposé pour le prix. Le nom de chaque fichier numérique doit être « nom de l'artiste_numéro »

(ex : Dupuis_01.jpg, Dupuis_02.jpg, etc).

• Un descriptif du projet proposé pour le prix (maximum 500 mots)

• Une biographie rédigée (maximum 300 mots)

• Un CV contenant les éléments suivants : coordonnées complètes, formation, sélection d'expositions et de publications

• Le formulaire de candidature dûment rempli et signé

• Une lettre de recommandation, adressée à Photo Elysée, de la ou du professionnel-le soutenant la candidature, qui doit également remplir et signer le formulaire à son attention

Les langues officielles du Prix Elysée sont le français et l'anglais. Photo Elysée se réserve le droit d'éditer les textes, en accord avec les photographes, et se charge de les traduire vers l'une ou l'autre langue.

Tout dossier incomplet, ou dont les éléments ne respectent pas les normes ou les formats mentionnés dans le présent règlement, sera automatiquement rejeté, sans autre justification.

Photo Elysée se réserve le droit d'archiver tout dossier partagé sur la plateforme Picter.

Chaque candidat-e s'engage à octroyer l'exclusivité de son projet au Prix Elysée jusqu'à l'annonce des nominé-e-s en juin 2024.

7. Nomination

Les 8 nominé-e-s seront sélectionné-e-s par un jury. La décision du jury est sans appel.

Les nominé-e-s seront contacté-e-s individuellement par Photo Elysée au printemps 2024. Il leur sera alors demandé de confirmer, dans un délai de cinq jours, leur participation au Prix Elysée et leur disponibilité fin juin 2024 afin de participer à l'événement d'annonce des nominé-e-s (la date exacte de l'événement leur sera communiquée ultérieurement). L'identité des nominé-e-s sera révélée publiquement à cette occasion et rediffusée le lendemain sur le site Internet du Prix Elysée ainsi que sur les réseaux sociaux et dans la presse. Une sélection des fichiers image sera remise à la presse et utilisée pour la promotion du Prix Elysée par le musée et Parmigiani Fleurier.

Si un-e candidat-e décline sa nomination, ne parvient pas à honorer les engagements inhérents à sa nomination ou ne confirme pas (ou trop tardivement) sa nomination, le jury sélectionnera un-e autre artiste.

Dès qu'elles et ils sont informé-e-s par Photo Elysée de leur sélection au printemps 2024, les nominé-e-s sont invité-e-s à signer un contrat par lequel elles et ils confèrent au musée un droit exclusif d'utilisation gratuite d'une sélection de leur travail établie par le musée pour la seule promotion du Prix Elysée et de la valorisation du travail en cours. Photo Elysée pourra conférer les mêmes droits à Parmigiani Fleurier. Après la signature du contrat, les nominé-e-s reçoivent leur contribution individuelle et peuvent commencer à travailler sur leur projet. Elles et ils s'engagent à ne pas rendre publics leur nomination et leur projet avant l'annonce officielle en juin 2024.

Les nominé-e-s s'engagent également à octroyer l'exclusivité de leur projet à Photo Elysée et à Parmigiani Fleurier jusqu'à l'annonce de la ou du lauréat-e en 2025. À l'exclusion de la ou du lauréat-e, elles et ils sont ensuite libres de mener à bien leur projet, de le publier et de l'exposer si elles ou ils le souhaitent. Elles et Ils pourront utiliser à cette occasion, sans y être obligé-e-s, la mention « Nominé-e du Prix Elysée 2025, avec le soutien de Parmigiani Fleurier ».

8. Présentation des projets nominés

En contrepartie de la contribution individuelle de 5'000 CHF qu'elles et ils perçoivent, les nominé-e-s s'engagent à fournir les éléments demandés par Photo Elysée selon le type de valorisation envisagé. Ces éléments ne feront pas référence, directement ou indirectement, à une marque ou produit horloger.

En outre, les nominé-e-s s'engagent à envoyer à Photo Elysée en février 2025 (la date exacte leur sera communiquée ultérieurement) :

• Un dossier complet, physique, du projet à l'attention du jury international contenant les éléments suivants :

• Une description détaillée du projet

• Un calendrier de production du projet

• De 5 à 20 visuels (version imprimée format A4 et fichiers haute définition correspondants, selon les normes spécifiées au point 6), qu'il s'agisse des images déjà montrées dans le cadre du Prix Elysée ou de nouvelles photographies réalisées entre temps

Les normes linguistiques, d'édition et de traduction appliquées au dossier de candidature (cf. point 6) s'appliquent également au dossier complet du projet.

Les nominé-e-s qui ne remettraient pas leur matériel à temps (voir dates ci-dessus) ou ne respecteraient pas les normes et formats exigés seront automatiquement éliminé-e-s du Prix Elysée.

Les images remises dans le dossier complet du projet peuvent être utilisées par Photo Elysée et Parmigiani Fleurier pour la promotion du Prix Elysée.

9. Jury

Le jury international est souverain. Il est seul habilité à désigner la ou le lauréat-e sur la base de son dossier de candidature, du dossier complet de son projet et de la valorisation qui en aura été faite dans le cadre du Prix Elysée.

Le jury comprend 7 membres, différents à chaque édition du Prix Elysée, ainsi répartis :

• 1 représentant-e désigné-e par Photo Elysée

• 1 représentant-e désigné-e par Parmigiani Fleurier

• 5 professionnel-le-s du monde de la photographie, incontesté-e-s et reconnu-e-s au niveau international, désigné-e-s par Photo Elysée

Le jury international se réunira au printemps 2025 et jugera les nominé-e-s sur la qualité de leur travail photographique, la pertinence de leur projet et leur capacité à le réaliser. La décision du jury désignant la ou le lauréat-e du Prix Elysée est irrévocable.

La ou le lauréat-e sera contacté-e personnellement par le musée. Elle ou Il s'engage à se rendre disponible en juin 2025 pour l'événement d'annonce correspondant, dont la date et le lieu lui seront alors communiquées, et à ne pas révéler sa victoire avant cette date. L'identité de la ou du lauréat-e sera révélée à cette occasion, puis diffusée le lendemain sur le site Internet du Prix Elysée.

10. Production du projet de la ou du lauréat-e 

À l'issue de la nomination de la ou du lauréat-e, le ou la commissaire l'accompagnera dans la production de son projet. Elle ou Il mettra à disposition son expertise, sur le fond et la forme, pour que la ou le lauréat-e puisse mener à bien son travail dans les délais (juin 2026) et selon le budget impartis.

La ou le lauréat-e s'engage à respecter les normes techniques imposées par Photo Elysée. Elle ou Il octroie l'exclusivité de son projet au musée de juin 2025 à juin 2026.

Le projet de la ou du lauréat-e sera présenté publiquement en juin 2026.

11. Droits et responsabilités

• Tous les textes et images remis dans le cadre du Prix Elysée devront être libres de tous droits de tiers dès le dépôt de la candidature

• Photo Elysée et Parmigiani Fleurier disposeront des droits nécessaires pour permettre la communication et la promotion du Prix Elysée par le musée et Parmigiani Fleurier, pour la diffusion dans la presse et la présentation dans le cadre des événements susmentionnés

• Pour les nominé-e-s, ces obligations demeureront en vigueur jusqu'à la désignation de la ou du lauréat-e. Pour la ou le lauréat-e, la question des droits fera l'objet d'un accord spécifique

• En se portant candidat-e, l'artiste accepte tous les termes du présent règlement

12. Divers

Photo Elysée se réserve le droit de modifier le présent règlement en tout temps, après en avoir dûment informé les candidat-e-s ayant déposé une candidature répondant aux critères définis dans le règlement avant sa modification.

Le présent règlement est régi par le droit suisse et les tribunaux ordinaires à Lausanne, Suisse, sont exclusivement compétents.

13. Rappel des dates

• Du 10 novembre 2023 au 28 janvier 2024 : dépôt des candidatures

• Juin 2024 : présentation des nominé-e-s

• Août 2024 : les premières images du projet sont prêtes à être montrées

• Janvier 2025 : valorisation du travail en cours des 8 nominé-e-s

• Février 2025 : délai de dépôt des dossiers pour la désignation de la ou du lauréat-e par le jury international

• Juin 2025 : cérémonie de remise du Prix Elysée à la-au lauréat-e

• Juin 2026 : délai d'achèvement du travail de la ou du lauréat-e et présentation lors d'un événement consacré
