Art historian, Freelance Curator and Writer

Elina Heikka is an art historian, freelance curator and writer with extensive knowledge in the field of photography. She served as the director of the Finnish Museum of Photography in 2007-2023. The museum is one of the key institutions of contemporary photography in the Nordic countries. Before the Finnish Museum of Photography Heikka worked as a researcher at the Finnish National Gallery and as editor-in-chief of a photography magazine. In 2023, she was part of the curatorial team of the Nordic photo exhibition Søsterskap at the Rencontres d´Arles photography festival. Elina Heikka is based in Helsinki and Lisbon

He is co-founder and coordinator of the Prémio Galiza de Fotografia Contemporânea (Galiza Award for Contemporary Photography), which he curates and produces, and artistic director of the Outono Fotográfico Association (Galiza). He was the curator of more than 100 exhibitions, curating photography festivals such as Encontros da Imagem, Imago Lisboa Photo Festival, Mês da Imagem do Porto and f/est Amarante (Portugal); Photoalicante, Fòrum Fotogràfic Can Basté and Emotiva (Spain) and Paraty em Foco and Encontros de Agosto (Brazil). He took charge of several exhibitions for galleries such as Adorna (Oporto, Portugal) Salgadeiras (Lisbon, Portugal), Marisa Marimón (Galiza) or Dosmilvacas (Spain), for public centers as the Museum Municipal de Ourense, the Centro Cultural Marcos Valcárcel, the Pazo da Cultura or even the Museum Provincial de Lugo in Galiza; the Museum da Imagem, the Centro Português de Fotografia and Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes in Portugal and the o Museum da Indústria in Fortaleza (Brazil). Besides that, he also organizes annually numerous exhibitions in every headquarters of Afundación in all Galician cities. He is pedagogical director of the Instituto de Produção Cultural e Imagem (IPCI, Porto and Lisbon, Portugal), where he is a teacher of Photography Curatorship in the Master in Artistic Photography. He also teaches at the Escuela Mistos (Alicante) and in the Documentary Reporting Expert course at the Vórtice Photo Agency. Photography teacher at the O Barco de Valdeorras City Council (Galiza) and mentor in the Contemporary Image Study Plan (Fortaleza, Brazil). As an editor, he highlights the work done for the editorial Difusora de Letras, Artes e Ideas in the collection of photobooks OF, which he is the coordinator, but also several photobooks for others publishers. As an author, he published “Don’t Look at My Camera”, a research about staged photography. His latest publication is an investigation into Romasanta, the Galician werewolf. Writes frequently photographic reviews for specialized magazines and opinion articles for different newspapers. He was the coordinator of Lab_in Gallery and the director of Sargadelos Gallery (Galiza). Worked a few years as a photojournalist, having some exhibitions of his work as an artist. After years of formal training (and more) in the field of visual arts and art history, specializing himself in photography, he constantly takes lessons about edition and curatorship. He is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Art Studies, Museological and Curatorial Studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (Portugal).

He combines artistic production with cultural management linked to the visual arts, is an independent curator and artistic director of Album, Festival of Image and Contemporary Photography.

A photographer by training, Paulo's professional career covers a wide variety of functions linked to contemporary art. From 2014 to 2020, director of the Estudio Tigomigo art gallery, in Terrassa (Barcelona). Since 2017 he has been a regular programmer and curator for public organizations and private entities in Catalonia, with more than a hundred exhibitions presented to date. In 2019 he promoted the creation of the Emotiva photography festival and directed the 2021 and 2022 editions. Since 2023 he has been the artistic director of Álbum, Festival of Image and Contemporary Photography. Member of the Council of Culture of the city of Terrassa, jury of various awards and scholarships and teaching. His interests include the diversity of artistic languages, shared creative processes and the dialogues that the works establish with the space they inhabit, specializing in the use of historical heritage spaces for exhibition proposals.
