Artistic Director, Der Greif

Caroline von Courten is a curator, editor, and researcher specializing in photography and visual culture. She is the Artistic Director of Der Greif, where she develops exhibitions, publications, and research-driven programs. She also lectures in the Camera Arts BA program at the Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art. Previously, she held curatorial roles at Foam Magazine, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Nederlands Fotomuseum. Her writing appears internationally, and she completed her PhD at Leiden University on the materiality of photography.

Francesca Hummler is an educator and curator based in San Diego. At Der Greif, she works across curation, publications, partnerships, and artist development initiatives, founding Der Greif’s Face-to-Face educational program. She holds an MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art and has previously worked in educational and curatorial roles at Photofusion in London, and currently as a researcher for the German Embassy in Washington, D.C. Francesca has served as a portfolio reviewer for FORMAT25, Fotofestiwal Łódź, Review Santa Fe, UWE Bristol, and Offspring Photo Meet, and regularly teaches internationally, including at the ICA in San Diego.

Ilaria Sponda is an independent curator, editor, and writer based in Milan. At the intersection of visual culture and distribution systems, she explores how cultural discourses shape exclusion, founding research frameworks around regional, transnational, and post-national concepts. She holds an MA in Culture Studies from Universidade Católica Portuguesa and has previously worked in curatorial assistant roles at Haus der Kunst München, Lothringer 13 Halle, and Goethe-Institut Athens. Ilaria has served as a portfolio reviewer for Sarajevo Photography Festival and Leipzig Photobook Festival, and regularly writes for international publications, including NERO and The British Journal of Photography.

Carolina Semprucci is a writer and graphic designer based in London, working internationally across photography, publishing, and visual identity. Her writing on photography and digital culture has appeared in PhMuseum’s Annual, Photography+, Gabble, and publications by Kult Books. As a designer, she has collaborated with cultural and research-driven organizations including ArtULTRA and The Justice Gap. She has taught publishing at London College of Communication and is currently Writer in Residence at Photoworks.
