Hutchison/Wheeler Storytelling Award for the News Video Workshop

The $2,000 Hutchison/Wheeler Storytelling Award is offered to aspiring photojournalists who need financial assistance to attend the NPPA News Video Workshop. The NPPA's workshop provides eye-opening experiences giving photojournalists fresh perspective and instilling confidence and skills in visualizing their stories. A great workshop can change you. And your vision can change the world. The award is for people who might not otherwise be able to attend the NPPA News Video Workshop.

It is open to working professional video photojournalists with at least six months of full-time employment or an accomplished student with a professional portfolio that includes three stories they have shot and edited.

What recipients receive:

  • The recipient will receive $2,000 to be used for paying a discounted workshop registration fee and other workshop related expenses.

Gordon Yoder Award

Gordon Yoder, NPPF Fellow and NPPA Life Member, established an award for video photojournalists wishing to attend the NPPA TV News Video Workshop.

Mr. Yoder's early career included the filming of theatrical newsreels. After serving in Korea as a war correspondent-photographer, he covered news stories for network television, including the civil rights strife of the 1950's and 60's. In addition, he manufactured and marketed motion picture camera equipment for the television industry. For many years the 16mm Yoder Sound Camera was standard equipment at stations and networks alike. The award is open to a working professional video photojournalist wishing to attend the NPPA TV News Video Workshop. Applicants must have at least six months full-time employment as a video photojournalist. Note this award is intended for beginning video photojournalists, not those with years of experience.  This award is NOT available to students.

What recipients receive:

  • The recipient will receive complimentary workshop registration and $1,000 to be used for workshop related expenses.
