About photo oxford 2023 open call

The Photo Oxford 23 Open Call welcomes work from photographers, curators, collectives and artists from around the world.

Our stellar panel of jurors are ready to engage with new and refreshing visions of life and personal experience expressed through photography.

Photo Oxford is an international festival of photography that takes place biannually. The dates for our next edition are 14th April to 6th May 2023. As the name suggests it takes place in the beautiful and historic city of Oxford which is a short train ride away from London.

The Festival is known for its connections to the great museums and colleges of the world famous universities of Oxford but we look to the world for participants and seek to engage in a global conversation about photography.

The world is in flux - everything is changing at almost every level of our daily lives. The jurors are looking for work that documents ‘personal inventories of experience’ which ties in with the Festival’s theme - ‘The Hidden Power of the Archive’. We want to see how the world looks to you right now. Fresh, energetic and connected to the great themes of our age: identity, climate change, Covid, sexuality, the domestic landscape, work (or lack of it), inflation, power (and shortages of it) and democracy for starters. But what is in your ‘personal inventory’ that speaks to your recent experience? We want to see tomorrow’s archives being formed today. That’s what we want to see.

You can enter with a single image or a series of between 5 and 15 images.

Preparing your images

File type

Images should be saved as jpegs at the highest quality available, with a colour profile attached. Either the RGB or sRGB colour profiles are recommended. Digital scans from film are also eligible providing they meet these technical guidelines.

Image size and resizing

Whilst no image sizes will be rejected at upload, winning images will be required to be printed, and so must be of sufficient quality to allow this. It is therefore advised that images measure a minimum of 1500 pixels on the longest side after any cropping. Where images submitted are smaller than this, it will be assumed that this is the largest image size available to the photographer, and may affect that image's chances of winning. The submission of larger file sizes is encouraged if available.

There are Photoshop and other image software tutorials online that show you how to best resize an image.

Image Manipulation

There are no restrictions regarding the manipulation of images using software or other techniques, provided that all imagery is the exclusive work of the submitting photographer and does not include any element that is the copyright of another.

Image sharpening, noise reduction and colour saturation

Excessive sharpening, noise reduction and colour saturation techniques should be avoided. We appreciate that entrants will attempt to prepare their entries to optimise appearance and appeal on screen, and this may include these techniques. Excessive use of any or all of them can result in an entry that will be unsuitable for printed media and therefore become invalid as a result.

Image descriptions

We encourage photographers to include a description about their work during the upload process. This is a great way to tell a story or other interesting facts about your image. The judges and the crowd will be able to read this while rating to give them insight into how you came about the shot.

Metadata

We would advise all entrants to add copyright information in the metadata of all submissions.
